Electronic Unit of Inquiry Books

We have been inspired by the Grade 5 Exhibition central idea:

The earth is our mother and as her children we are destroying her.

So... for our next unit of inquiry we're going to save paper and not use unit of inquiry books. Instead, we're going to do everything electonically and use a Microsost Word document as an electronic unit of inquiry book.

This Year's Parties are a Disaster!

Hello kids,

All our plans are now ruined, I'm afraid.

Apparently, Grade 3 want to have a pool party and they normally have a swimming lesson on Wednesday afternoons so that means they get priority over us.

AND... we have been told that there will be a big assembly tomorrow afternoon anyway... so everyone's parties are ruined!!! Aaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Very frustrating.

Well, we can go out and play football or something, or softball. We'll do something fun.

And, it's my turn to choose someone for the Learner Profile Award - who will it be?

We're Swimming on Wednesday - Bring Your Stuff!

Most people voted to do swimming on Wednesday afternoon... so that's what we're doing. The pool is booked from 1pm - 2:30. We'll have races, play waterpolo, play games and stuff like that, OK?

Class Party

Next week is the last week of school. I'm going to give you two choices about what we do to celebrate and to say goodbye for a few weeks.

Choice One: Everybody brings in their favourite dish - no junk food - and we have a banquet in the classroom. We will all dress up in suits, saris or other very smart clothes, and we'll enjoy our feast!

Choice Two: I will book the swimming pool for the afternoon and we'll just muck about in the pool, play games and relax.

So, it's up to you... make a comment to say what you want to do.

The New 4S - Class of 2006-2007

So... it's the start of a new year. New faces, new personalities, new ideas! One thing is the same though, and that is the "philosophy" of 4S.

We are here to become CONFIDENT learners who are not afraid to take risks, to make mistakes, to be creative and to push limits and boundaries in order to progress. We have a strong sense of what is right and wrong, and we make INFORMED CHOICES about the way we behave.

This is a very important year for the students of 4S... getting ready for the challenges of Grade 5. They will do a lot of growing up! They will build upon and develop their communication skills. They will strengthen their mathematical skills and look increasingly at the world from a mathematical perspective. They will become comfortable with expressing themselves through the arts. And... perhaps most importantly, they will become responsible citizens of our world.

Learning from the Ancient Greeks

After reading about 'democracy' in Ancient Greece, we decided to try some class democracy. We held an election to vote for eight people to form the 4S 'Assembly'. The only difference between our election, and Ancient Greek elections, is that we allowed females to vote!

The new members of the Assembly then had their own election to vote for two Presidents, a male and a female. They are Zahra and Moin.

The first issue at hand in their first meeting was law, and the development of some class laws. They discussed the purpose of laws, and agreed on a definition for that purpose:

The 4S laws... "ensure people follow the class rules and have the rights to do things in order to have a better class reputation."

Here is a thought-provoking question for you. Please answer sensibly.

Student Led Conferences

It's time for the annual Student Led Conferences to take place, on Tuesday the 25th of April.

These are a fantastic opportunity for parents/guardians to get an insight into their children, what and how they learn and who they are when at school.
It's an opportunity for students to "show-off" new skills, new understandings, new attitudes and new knowledge in a really meaningful way.
It's a chance for teachers to see their students really putting their learning into action.

Remember, the students are in charge. They will have the conference planned right down to the smallest detail!!!

So... you only have twelve weeks left in Grade 4! Two Units of Inquiry left - "Ancient Civilisations" and "Forces and Energy".

Over the next twelve weeks you will really have the chance to show how far you have come since the start of the year. The Student-led Conferences are on the 25th of April, and you have the opportunity to show your parents what your capable of.

We're going to be doing a lot of maths work so that you leave Grade 4 feeling confident that you're ready to take on new mathematical challenges in Grade 5. We'll be exploring fractions and decimals, shape and space, angles, measures, handling data, techniques for addition and subtraction and reasoning about numbers.

We're going to do a lot of writing too, helping you to identify areas in which you need to improve, giving you personal writing targets and building your confidence in your ability to transfer your thoughts and ideas into writing.

We are also going to do a lot of thinking about attitudes, and which ones you need to develop so that you can make the most of Grade 5.

It's going to be a lot of hard work, you will need plenty of energy, enthusiasm and commitment. Let's go for it!!!

My holiday in Bali

I have just had a fantastic beach holiday in Bali. It started with a flight on Singapore Airlines (my favourite airline) and a couple of hours waiting at Singapore airport, where I bought myself an mp3 player. When we arrived in Bali, the sun was shining and the air was hot and humid. A driver picked us up and drove us through the peaceful streets of Denpasar, Legian and then finally Seminyak, where we stayed. Our hotel was called the Villa Bale Agung and the rooms were nice and spacious, with big bathrooms too. There was a tempting salt water swimming pool and a little restaurant and the beach was two minutes walk away.

I spent most of the holiday surfing, alhtough it took me a week to get back into being fit and strong enough to do it properly - it's hard work! I also did a lot of motorbike riding around the beaches and ricefields nearby. You can hire a moped there for about $2 a day, so I had one for the whole three weeks!

I was a bit disappointed when it was time to come back because it meant the holiday was finished and that I wouldn't be able to go surfing again for ages. However, I was excited about coming back to Dhaka and about seeing my class again!!!

Yaman's Mum's Famous Stir-Fried Chicken with Cashew Nuts

Ingredients
300 grams of chiken breast, slice thinly
1/2 cup fried cashew nut
1/4 cup crisp-fried dried spur chilli, cut into 1 cm peices,
1 red spur chilli sliced diagonally.
1 small onion sliced
1/3 cup spring onion cut into 1 piece
1/2 table spoon chopped garlic
1/4 tea spoon salt
1 1/2 table spoon fish sauce
1 table spoon dark soy sauce
2 table spoon cooking oil
fresh coriander for garnish

Instructions
1. Fry the garlic in oil over medium heat until golden and fragrant, add the chicken and cook until done.
2. Add onion, cashew nuts, fried dried chillies and spring onion
stir well.
3. Season to taste with fish sauce, dark soy sauce and salt, stir again, turn off the heat
4. Spoon into a serving dish, garnish with red chilli and fresh cariander
before serving.

Now you may eat and enjoy!!!

We had a great afternoon eating wonderful food and chatting. I was really impressed by the mature behaviour of the kids, the way they asked each other politely to be passed dishes of food, they way they chatted about the flavours and textures and the way they took responsibility for clearing up afterwards. It was an excellent way to spend time with them and to get to know them all in a different situation. Look out for recipes for some of the most popular dishes on the website soon.

Have a really good holiday, relax, sleep, run around, see friends and family, read books, watch movies, eat good food and... be ready to work even harder when we get back!

End of Term Party

At the end of term, most classes have a party to celebrate. They get crisps, chocolate, sweets and stuff like that and then all go hyper and crazy, making a mess all over the floor and ending the term in chaos.

Mr Sherratt doesn't really like to do things that way... sorry!!! He would like 4S to have a banquet, a feast of fantastic flavours from around the world. So, he is going to ask the kids in his class to bring in one of their favourite dishes for us to share.

Don't bring too much, just enough so that we can all sit together at a table and try a little bit of everything. Please write in the comments what you plan to bring for the feast.

4S Decide to Ban BeyBlades

After our online debate, we have decided not to bring BeyBlades into school anymore... everybody agreed that they are more trouble than they are worth. Everybody agreed that they cause problems. However, Farhana thought that teachers steal BeyBlades and so the 4S Detective Agency is working hard to uncover the mysterious BeyBlade stealing teacher! Hopefully, the offender will soon be brought to justice.

Our trip to the Old and Child Rehabilitation Centre

As the ending to our Unit of Inquiry called "We Can be Heroes", we went to the OCRC in Gazipur. We spent time with the elderly people who have been given a home there, and we shared some fruit, flowers and sweets with them. They were really happy to chat with us, to answer our questions and just to spend some time with some kids!!! We felt like we were heroes... even if it was just for a day. All of us would love to go back there again soon, to see the people again.
